Seize The Day - From Newsies

I watched the movie Newsies (also called News Boys) on laser disc (you know, the big round thing that preceded the dvd). I think I have the disc, but it's in a box in my storeroom.

I enjoyed the movie. It's a Walt Disney musical, starring Christian Bale (of Batman Begins fame) in his younger days. He sang and danced in the movie.

Newsies proves that great musicals can still be made, but it also proves that it can take some time for most modern people to admit they like it. The story is about the 1899 strike of the New York paperboys. The central characters are Jack Kelly, a streetwise orphan played by Christian Bale(the main reason most females love this movie), and David Jacobs, a kid from a more stable, family lifestyle. Through the course of the strike they put on, the two boys become unlikely best friends, and with the other Newsies, learn about loyalty, friendship, and believing that they can work together to fight for a better life. - From a review by Monty Moonlight on Amazon.com

I like the song Seize The Day very much. The melody is infectious, and the lyrics inspiring. The chorale version is very good too. The dance sequence and the drumming segment make it watchable over and over again.

Enjoy the 2 clips, and the lyrics below.

Music by Alan Menken.
Lyrics by Jack Feldman.

DAVID:
Open the gates and seize the day
Don't be afraid and don't delay
Nothing can break us
No one can make us
Give our rights away
Arise and seize the day

DAVID and NEWSIES:
Now is the time to seize the day
Send out the call and join the fray

DAVID:
Wrongs will be righted
If we're united

DAVID and NEWSIES:
Let us seize the day

Friends of the friendless, seize the day
Raise up the torch and light the way
Proud and defiant
We'll slay the giant
Let us seize the day

Neighbor to neighbor
Father to son
One for all and all for one

Open the gates and seize the day
Don't be afraid and don't delay
Nothing can break us
No one can make us
Give our rights away

Neighbor to neighbor
Father to son
One for all and all for o
